Finding Joy in the Everyday with Brooke Lancaster

Finding Joy in the Everyday with Brooke Lancaster

By The Green Room Journal

There are artists who paint what they see, and then there are artists who help us see differently.

At first glance, Brooke Lancaster's work feels playful. Bright swimsuits, patterned clothing, cheerful colors, and familiar everyday objects immediately catch your attention. But spend a little more time with her paintings, and something unexpected begins to happen...

Suddenly, you're thinking about your own memories. Maybe it's a favorite beach towel hanging in the backyard after a long summer day. Maybe it's the swimsuit you wore on family vacations growing up. Maybe it's the feeling of warm pavement under bare feet as you carried sandy flip-flops home.

Her paintings have a way of turning ordinary moments into memories.

It's hard not to look at everyday life a little differently after that.

One person might see a life jacket and instantly think of summers at the lake. Someone else might remember family beach vacations. Brooke's paintings leave room for your own memories to step in.

A Creative Path That Took an Unexpected Turn

Brooke has always been creative.

Painting came naturally long before it became a career, but for years she imagined that creativity would take a different shape. After college, she built a career in cosmetology, developing an eye for color through makeup artistry and hair color.

She enjoyed the work, but something always felt unfinished.

"I knew a creative outlet never should drain me," she shared.

By 2020, she had already begun considering a different path. When the pandemic brought the world to a standstill, it also gave Brooke the push she needed to fully step into painting.

While many people remember that season for its uncertainty, Brooke chooses to remember it differently.

It became the year she decided to create joy.

"I like to think of it as the year that pushed me to paint professionally. It pushed me to put joy into the world when I think everyone needed it most."

Looking a Little Closer

People often describe Brooke's paintings as happy.

They're colorful.

They're playful.

They're full of life.

She's grateful people connect with that feeling, but she hopes they don't stop there.

"My work may be bright and colorful," she shared, "but there is so much more behind it."

Rather than chasing grand subjects, Brooke is fascinated by the objects many of us overlook. Clothing, swimsuits, towels, and everyday textiles become the main characters in her paintings.

It's a reminder that the smallest things often carry the biggest stories.

"In a world where it is hard to focus on one specific thing or moment, I like to force the viewer to pay attention."

That perspective changes everything.

A swimsuit isn't simply a swimsuit anymore.

It's the memory of a vacation.

A favorite beach.

Children laughing.

Sunburned shoulders.

Saltwater drying on your skin.

Inspired by Home

Growing up near the coast continues to shape nearly everything Brooke creates.

The ocean isn't just part of the background. It's woven into the stories her paintings tell.

She speaks fondly about beach days with her children, salty air, boardwalks, and afternoons spent with her maternal grandmother hanging clothes on the line.

Those memories eventually became one of her signature subjects.

Her colorful clotheslines aren't just about laundry.

They're about family.

They're about nostalgia.

They're about finding beauty in moments that pass unnoticed.

"I think every single trip down the boardwalk is new inspiration."

A Studio Filled With Stories

Ask Brooke what someone would notice first when walking into her studio, and the answer probably isn't what you'd expect.

Not the paint.

Not the canvases.

Not even the artwork.

Instead...

"The colorful little handprints and footprints that cover my studio floors."

Years of painting alongside her children have left their mark in the very best way.

Front and center on her desk sits another reminder of why she creates: a handwritten note from her son, Stone, written when she first began her art career.

He was only four years old.

She framed it.

Today it still sits where she can see it every time she works.

It's a small detail.

But it explains everything.

Finding Order in the Mess

One of the most surprising things Brooke shared had nothing to do with painting techniques.

She describes herself as a little messy and unorganized in everyday life.

Yet her paintings are known for their crisp edges, carefully balanced compositions, and remarkably clean backgrounds.

She thinks the two might actually be connected.

"It is the organized that I wish to be amongst the messy."

There's something beautifully human about that.

Sometimes the work we create becomes the space we're searching for ourselves.

More Than Beautiful Paintings

When asked what she hopes readers remember after spending time with her story, Brooke's answer perfectly captures the heart behind her work.

She hopes people leave feeling inspired.

She hopes they begin noticing the ordinary a little differently.

She hopes they'll romanticize the everyday.

Maybe they'll see a swimsuit hanging on a clothesline and suddenly remember a family vacation.

Maybe they'll pause a little longer the next time they walk the boardwalk.

Maybe they'll realize that even the smallest objects can carry an entire lifetime of memories.

Those moments are easy to miss.

Thankfully, Brooke has made a career out of helping us notice them.

Coming Soon...

"Hung Up" 36"x36"x1.5"

Brooke is currently preparing to release a brand new clothesline collection titled "Oh, The Places We'll Go."

If it's anything like the work that has come before it, readers can expect joyful color, thoughtful storytelling, and celebration of everyday life that have become her signature.

Brooke reminds us that some of life's biggest memories are tucked inside its smallest moments.
